Installing OpenBSD 4.2

OpenBSD 4.2 - Installing Instructions

Upgrade existing OpenBSD to 4.1

If your machine already has OpenBSD but older than 4.1, then perform an upgrade to 4.1

Getting a CD

  • If you have i386, PowerPC Mac, AMD 64 or Sparc 64, want comfort, an OpenBSD sticker, stylish case, full source tree, have money and want to support OpenBSD, Order a 4.2 CD
  • Otherwise, go to the FTP/HTTP mirror list and pick the closest one to you which works and has a "4.2" directory inside and go into the "4.2" dir. Go into alpha, ..., i386,... mvme68k directory according to your machine hardware. If you have at least moderately fast internet connection to the machine where you want to upgrade, download the cd42.iso. Otherwise download install42.iso. Burn the iso.

Booting

Insert the CD into the machine and reboot it. Wait until you see a lot of text messages on blue background scroll by. You will be asked: "(I)nstall, (U)pgrade or (S)hell?".

Upgrade or Install?

If the system already has an older version of OpenBSD, perform an upgrade version by version (example: 4.0 -> 4.1 -> 4.2). Otherwise, perform an installation.
